Short and safest answer is to oil your machine every time you use it. If you are using your machine a lot, or for very long periods of time it is crucial that you oil your machine to ensure optimal performance.

A drop of oil is sufficient for this process. focus on the square, white bearings at the top and bottom of the machine. Add a couple of drops of general sewing machine oil on both sides of the bearing and turn the machine on. Do this several times until the machine runs smoothly.
